Brazilian Dancer/Choreographer Cristina Moura in "like an idiot"

Cristina Moura is one of Brazil's most provocative and exciting performing artists. Cristina studied classical ballet and contemporary dance and has been a professional dancer since she was 15 years old working and touring worldwide with different companies from Brazil and Europe.

"like an idiot" is a performance that combines a brilliant unique dance vocabulary with performance art, and theater. Utilizing otherworldly recorded music and her own idiosyncratic choreographic movement, Cristina moves about the stage as if possessed, drawing pictures in midair speaking with her hands, head, arms and body creating a mosaic of images, sounds, and gestures.

When: Thursday, May 29; Saturday, May 31; and Sunday, June 1st
Time:  Thursday at 7:00PM, Saturday at 9:30PM and Sunday at 4:30PM

Free English-As-A-Second Language Classes

City College of San Francisco offers FREE English-As-A-Second Language classes, Citizenship classes and Computer classes at neighborhood campuses throughout San Francisco.  Classes are offered weekdays between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. There are also classes offered on weekends in some locations.  There are immediate openings at all of the campuses.  Levels and times of class availability vary from campus to campus. Students can enroll at any time throughout the semester.

"Contadores de Estórias" was created for the Brazilian children. Our intention is to provide an opportunity for these kids to be in contact with the Portuguese language, literature, music and folklore of Brazil. Brazilian books for children are read and entertainment provided. We meet once a month for 2 hours and have a lot of fun.

Luciana Souza - vocals, Matt Aronoff - bass, Clarence Penn - drums
Multiple Grammy-nominated composer and vocalist Luciana Souza doesn't just make jazz, she redefines it. In her music lush vocals, penetrating bass lines and driving rhythms fuse in a cyclone of style and sound. Souza devotes the first half of this evening to poems by the great Pablo Neruda with intimate settings for voice and piano. In the second half Souza changes direction toward her native Brazil, with her inimitable interpretation of the "New Bossa Nova".

The couple joins mystics gathered around Sebastião, a black man who predicts the coming of an apocalyptic upheaval which will turn the Sertão into the sea and the sea into the Sertão. Ignored by Manuel, Rosa's eagerness brings about a violent break-up with the messianic preacher. As they keep travelling, the couple meet the survivors of the gang of cangaceiros led by Lampião.

This is a never before seen documentary short which employs images captured more than 50 years ago. In April 1954, during the festivities of the fourth centennial of Sao Paulo, the filmmaker went to Ibirapuera Park with his 16mm wind-up Kodak and shot six minutes of a wonderful show by Pessoal da Velha Guarda, with Pixinguinha, Donga, Joao da Bahiana, Almirante, Alfredinho do Flautin, Jaco Palmieri and Benedito Lacerda.
